Sister Site TriToFly.com

I am happy to share our sister site with you. It revolves around a healthy lifestyle triggered by the sport of triathlon… the story of a couple who love, train, and live an active lifestyle.

The gentleman, Jesse, has been a triathlete well over ten years. Having competed in Iron Man’s, Olympic, and Sprint distance triathlons, Jesse applied the same tools acquired by the structure of the sport, to his life.

The results were nothing short of amazing.

Jesse had an absolutely horrific childhood, and as an adult, he struggled greatly. His mental health was ignored, and it was a matter of time before he had a mental break. Then as he approached his 30’s, he got involved in the sport of triathlon. His determination, bad ass athletic abilities, and ability to go deep and suffer had made him a top triathlete.

Then he met Riss… and they fell madly in love.

He taught Riss all the things he had learned, and they began training together. Even though Jesse hasn’t competed in over a year, running, cycling, and hiking is now a huge part of their lives… and neither rules out the possibility of future competitions.

The training is a must for both of them, regardless of the finish line. What is important is that all that exercise is not only good for you physically, but it is also great for you mentally.

Grab hold of life with both hands and make the most of every single day. Everyone’s best will not look the same, so don’t compare yourself to others. Just resolve to do the best you can within your limitations… Remove all preconceived expectations (for frustration is expectation going unmet)… Don’t become stagnant, instead focus on continuously learning something new… Put mindfulness to practice where it will benefit you, as it is highly successful in testing mood disorders and chronic pain… And continue growing in passion for yourself to live your best life!

Always be open to living… this one life is all that we know to exist, there is no other. So get to living your best life and becoming the very best you!

10 Ultimate Self-Care Tips

A great article I wanted to share here. Self care is very important and can make a huge difference in your quality of life. If you properly care for yourself, you are better able to care for others. I hope you enjoy these 10 self care tips and incorporate them into your daily life.

Becoming the Very Best You

“Taking care of yourself doesn’t mean me first, it means me too.”- L.R. Knost

An article from NAMI (National Alliance On Mental Health) about self-care and Taking Care Of Yourself says that self-care is “like the advice we’re given on airplanes: put on your own oxygen mask before trying to help someone else with theirs.” So as is obvious, it is a pretty big deal.

Before being a caregiver to others, you must be able to care for your “self” first. Improving your relation ship with yourself will help you both mentally, and physically… making you more resilient, and better able to handle the ups and downs of life.

A fantastic way to ensure great mental health is to take care of yourself physically. A strong, and healthy foundation is key to building a strong mental and physical connection. Here are a few key things to practice:

  1. Refrain from alcohol…

Treadmill or Dreadmill? Improve your relationship with your treadmill.

I am one of (likely) very few people who actually loves jumping on the treadmill. In fact, most people think of theirs as a “dreadmill”… sitting in the corner of some obscure room, collecting dust and cobwebs, emanating a spooky “creature of the night” vibe, just waiting to become the death of them. It is a reminder of just how long a single minute, just 60 measly seconds, can feel like a long moment in Hell. How did I get so lucky to have a love affair with my treadmill?

I make my treadmill work for me instead of the other way around.

Using my treadmill as a tool to escape… in particular, a tool to escape into a good book. I have found myself completing a half marathon walking in various speeds and inclines, simply because the book I am reading is so captivating, and the last thing I want is to stop reading… and so instead of jumping off my treadmill to continue reading I honor my agreement with myself: If I want to read, I have to do it on the treadmill… and so I walk.

Now, I have not always had such love for the human hamster wheel, I certainly have had my share of a “dreadmill” stand-off… especially as I introduced running to my routine. Though I would come to dread jumping on that torture trap, I came to realize that the treadmills of today are not your Mom’s treadmill and to put it simply, treadmills are not all created equal. If you want to make your cardio time on your treadmill feel productive and enjoyable (imagine being out in nature… it doubles as great meditation practice), definitely do your research and find the best treadmill that money can buy for the price-point you can afford. You don’t have to be miserable on your treadmill any longer!

Take time to research the different models and all the bells and whistles that are important to you. If you want not only an incline setting, but also a decline setting, that is possible… as is a treadmill with a great shock system to help protect the joints in your body. Many treadmills have built in programs with different workout options from a simple walk, to intense inclines to help you burn fat and work your cardiovascular system. I’ve even seen systems with two tracks, one for each foot to land on, simulating trail walking/jogging. No matter what you are looking for, with a little patience and due diligence, you are sure to find it.

Those bells and whistles I mention do not come free and you will find that the more intricate the treadmill, the more money you will be spending. Personally, a higher quality product with few “extra’s” is the way to go… the motor will be strong, the unit stable, the incline will be sufficient, and the built-in programs definitely give you a run for your money (pun intended). This is the type of treadmill I went for. The display isn’t too huge, so I use an over the door hook to hook onto the display in order to hold my Kindle for my reading sessions. For the most part, I am able to do intervals, even full on jogging, and my Kindle doesn’t budge.

If all else fails, and you still feel as though the treadmill is a dreadmill, put it in front of a T.V. and do your treadmill training while watching your favorite television programs. This should prove to be a great distraction, possibly even helping you look forward to your next treadmill session. Working out doesn’t have to be miserable, nor does it have to be at full intensity. Just 30 minutes a day will improve your cardiovascular health dramatically, help you lose weight, reduce stress, boost both your mood and your energy levels, and improve your memory, productivity, and creativity. That sounds like a fantastic trade-off for just 30 minutes of your time, especially when those 30 minutes can be a simple brisk walk… you don’t have to put out max effort to reap the rewards!

So no matter how you feel about jumping on that human hamster wheel, you certainly owe it to yourself. Find what helps you to endure just 30 minutes… and watch as you add time to your lifespan… You are worth the effort!

Gold Strike Canyon Hot Springs Trail

Gold strike hot springs hike Colorado River

~Oh hiking I love thee… nature comes to life… my heart in chorus with your beat…~ Bmuse

Gold Strike Canyon Hot Springs Trail is near Las Vegas, NV. It is situated East of Boulder City Nevada, near the Hoover Dam. In fact, one picture posted shows the bridge over the Colorado River. Happy Hiking!!!

The weather has been absolutely beautiful, springing forth people who enjoy getting out to enjoy this particular hike that is certainly not for your beginner, especially a lone newb. The hike down is beautiful, you can’t help but be in awe as the mountain seems to grow taller next to you… the rock itself is gorgeous, changing in texture and color the further down you go, sometimes dark and wet in areas, others, different shades of red with some green growth. It seemed to get more mesmerizing the further along we got.

Gold Stike Hot Springs Hike

In some of the more precarious areas, ropes have been successfully mounted, enabling you to scale, or rather rappel, your way down these particular areas that could possibly put a halt to your hike unless you are the awe inspiring Alex Honnold. Ok, it isn’t that bad, but it can be a little scary, and we witnessed some who got stuck from the mental anguish that comes from trying to shimmy down steep rocks. It didn’t trigger my personal fear of heights, but when the rock is wet, sandy, and steep, it is a recipe for a slip and fall… and that would certainly be bad. Horrific for the fallen, and absolutely physically demanding on others trying to climb back out with the injured.

All in all… I loved it! Getting outdoors, taking in the fresh air, and basking in the suns rays is so important for our mental health… movement produces endorphins, lubricates our joints, and keeps our heart healthy, all so very important!

This type of hike is where I feel in my element… I was like a mountain goat on its favorite little ledge… thoroughly enjoying the climbing, balancing, feeling the rock under my feet and my toes trying to grip each surface, and searching out different routes I could utilize to feel even more challenged. I know that I will soon be on the lookout for more hikes of this nature to continue growing my skills… and I will no doubt be back for more of this one. My only disappointment was the lack of hot-springs. There use to be several pools of warm and hot water along this trail, ending with the always super cold Colorado River, but now, I only observed one small hot-spring capable of holding a few people for a taste of natures hot-tub. However, because of the technicality involved, the beautiful weather, ropes secured in those difficult areas for all to use, I felt challenged and (dare I say it) feel this may be my new favorite hike.

***I must note that this hike is closed for several months out of the year, our summer months, due to the extreme heat that is natural for our location. Several people have sadly passed away while trying to accomplish this hike during the hot months, often they are not your “hiker” types…unprepared without the proper amount of water, nourishment, or proper gear. This isn’t a hike you decide to do in flip flops with half a bottle of water. You must be prepared! I am going to share links to purchase the gear I used personally… my two favorite items: 1. My water-pack  and 2. Trekking Poles. The water-pack wears like a vest, and comes with two collapsible water bottles. It has a nice large area to hold any necessities you may want to bring with you, but I use this area to hold a bladder to ensure I have plenty of water on hand. Now, for this hike, the trekking poles are not absolutely needed. I honestly could have done without them, but they were very handy, even in the areas where I needed to use my hands for climbing. If they got in the way, I tossed them down… no biggie… but wow, they came in handy! Not only did I use them to assist hiking through the softer sand and rock, but they were awesome for using them to catapult myself over small streams of water. Not once did I regret taking them.

Enjoy the pictures… check out the gear… and when you are in the area, make plans to conquer Gold Strike Hot Springs Trail. I promise you that you will not be disappointed!

Click on the pics to check out this gear. The poles are for all seasons, but if you want something more simple, not a problem. After you click on the pic, simply use the search bar to search for other poles. Same goes for the water-pack vest. Happy browsing!

Beauty and Catastrophe

haunting

Enchanting.

Haunting.

Dwelling in here is beauty and catastrophe…

limitless imagination…

bountiful frustration.

The moon resides more often than the sun.

An enticing tide,

Poetic ride.

The beast finds me no matter where I run.

Power finds me,

controls me, elicits behaviors

exceeding the one I call me.

Seraphs in heaven weep and pound

their fists…

Even they in their bliss,

can’t bring me peace.

Even I, being on bent knees,

Peace eludes me.

Big Thanks To “13 Reasons Why”

13-reasons-why

13 Reasons Why…

This t.v. series has started addressing the very serious issues happening to our teenagers across the world. They address sexual assault, gay bashing, bullying, cyber bullying, physical fights, sexuality, blackmail, coercion, our court system, and the way victims are turned into villian’s and worse. They also address the glorified hierarchy of the jocks occurring in schools everywhere, relationships, and of course the insecurities that all teenagers seem to possess to some degree.

These are all very worthy causes to bring to light and begin a conversation. However, for me, I not only applaud them for all the reasons I mentioned, but I applaud them for addressing these 2 things…

School shootings, and suicide.

Not only do they address suicide, but they also show what the aftermath of such a tragic choice does to all those around you. It shows the example of ruined relationships, the sadness and anger it invokes, the way many people need to “blame” someone or something. They address the need to have an open conversation about suicide, and also the need to tone it down so it does not infiltrate the minds of “at risk” youth (and adults), and create a contagion affect.

13 Reasons Why begs us to open up a dialogue with those we care about and address these very serious issues. All of these topics are what MANY teenagers deal with. Adults don’t quite grasp what all the social media can do to our children… how it opens one up to being bullied, how fake Facebook pages (or any other social media source) are set up to trick an unknowing person/victim. How taking a photo can lead to disaster… especially if it is provocative in any way, or a rumor presented along with it. Often, very detrimental consequences follow. Not to mention that many violators get away with what they do.

Many seemed to be concerned about the topics addressed during the 1st season… believing that young people cannot handle watching these issues, and didn’t think the show was good for teens to watch. This seems ridiculous to me considering all the “shooting” video games teenagers play,  not to mention the games younger kids play where they break into a neighbors house to try to discover what is in the basement… finally seeing that the neighbor is keeping people locked up against their will. WTF is that about??? Children are exposed to these types of games, and worse, but we cannot speak with them about suicide, bullying, sexual assault, and many more issues they deal with on a constant basis?? This is insanity.

This is the generation of overprotecting our kids to the point that they do not have the skills needed to take care of themselves, emotionally or otherwise. We are crippling them by doing this and it is truly sad.

So I applaud 13 Reasons Why, those in charge for creating the show, Netflix for embracing it, and the fight needed to bring about the second season and more… thank you for being the voice we all need.

IceBox Canyon

IceboxCanyon

For two weeks we built a friendship from a common ground… our mental health. It was innocent, yet something kept drawing me to you. I would have to refrain from writing to you CONSTANTLY… I just wanted to crawl inside of your mind and learn who you were, who you wanted to be.

Then we decided to meet.

A hike to appease the fire inside of us… to have the time to really dive into each-others minds.

We met on common ground to travel together to Icebox Canyon.

My heart speeds up now at the memory of getting out of my car and seeing you, the physical you I didn’t really remember on our first meeting. I remember most the feeling you ignited within me… I remember your curly short hair, your athletic build, the easy smile that reached your eyes and lit up my world. Butterflies at the memory of your embrace… I can still recall the way you smelled, how my body melded to yours, still innocent and unknowing, yet treading on completely new feelings, a new energy never experienced before. I could feel an electrical surge… darts of energy diving off my body, surging into yours.

I could have lived forever in that embrace… and yet, that was just the beginning. I expected to be nervous yet I was not… I was something entirely different… yet I couldn’t recognize it yet. You played “Hero”, and extended your hand… I took it into mine… the electricity that shot into me was intoxicating. I could feel your energy combine with mine, a reverberation that I could feel to my bones, and I could FEEL you. The walls I built were not in place with you… somehow you broke through and the intensity of your Being grasping for me took my breath from my chest. Your energy and mine chased and followed, filling me to the brim with a feeling that I can only describe as feeling “whole”… no longer depleted of the fire I thought I lost long ago. With purpose you played that song… changing its memory forever within me… never again would it be associated with devastation, but instead, a new beginning… in that moment of feeling your energy burn into me, a new hope was created. When you removed your hand from mine, its absence was immediately felt… and it was unnatural.

The conversation came easily… excitement was overflowing. The trail was just as easy, and yet for one reason or another, once it got slightly steeper I reached for you to find you reaching for me… who reached first?? I thought I did, yet you tell me it was you. We remained in our bubble… pink arrows showing the way… the blue sky brilliant with whispy clouds passing quickly through. We sat against rocks, skin on fire with each others touch, my barriers collapsing around my feet… and I wanted them to stay down. I wanted to let you in.

I got lost in your touch…not just the way you touched me, but the blaze that erupted from how I felt touching you.  I could see the looks from others who knew what we would still come to realize… they could see the magnetism, the energy we exuded, they could see we were meant to be… your care in my safety and in making sure I was comfortable with each step. I saw it clearly in their gaze, the knowing smile of their lips. And still, as I noticed them, I was hopelessly lost in you. My head on your chest… I would sigh… “I could listen to his heart beat forever”. THIS WAS NEW. UNEXPECTED. INTOXICATING.

The sun is disappearing from the sky, evening falling fast… I beg time to slow. I am not ready to release you yet. We drive… in silence… my mind racing and asking “what the hell is this”… this can’t be real. The radio plays… a sadness looms. I feed off your emotion and feel a new feeling… desperation. When will I see you … I MUST see you again… I can’t wait till Thursday, I think I could possibly wither away. Tuesday it will be…

I watch you pull away… Oh my God could this be? The cynic in me crumbled… He is the mate to my soul… Later you wrote… Serendipitous. I smile to myself… I am going to ride his lightening bolt.

That boy is mine.
